In the afternoon of August 1, the United States Air Force reportedly carried out a series of bombing raids on ISIS bases in the city of Sirte in Libya. According to a news update, the operation was carried out at the request of the Libyan Presidential Council headed by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj.

Russia has always stood up for decisive actions which would annihilate ISIS and other terrorist organisations regardless of their location, to be undertaken in full compliance with international law. At the same time, we believe that it is vitally important that all countries fighting terrorism should closely coordinate their efforts.

In order to achieve a lasting settlement of the Libyan crisis, we call on all political forces in Libya to demonstrate wisdom and overcome internal disagreements in the interest of all people of their country. This will help keep alive the political process launched in Skhirat, Morocco, which aims to shape national state institutions, including the army and the police, ensure security and law and order in Libya and effectively counter the terrorist threat.
