August 2015

Despite the Tripoli government announcing the start of a military offensive to free Sirte from the clutches of IS on 11 August, only one brigade set out from the city of Misrata on Thursday morning.

When it arrived at the last checkpoint on the edge of IS-controlled territory, it found that promised reinforcements were not there and turned back.

While ordinary civilians, including some women – one of whom was killed – fought against IS in the streets of Sirte, hundreds of trained soldiers were marching in Tripoli. This is really shameful.

Sirte is becoming the IS capital of Libya and, when the people rose up against it, no-one came to help.

It defies belief that Misrata would come to the aid of Sirte when in 2011, they lynched, tortured and murdered anyone with black skincommitted genocide against the Tawergha and initiated a campaign in October, 2012 to massacre civilians in Bani Walid.

Their siege of Bani Walid and their actions against unarmed civilians will be remembered in the history of infamy and shame.

In Sirte and Bani Walid,  there was an agenda to ethnically and ideologically cleanse the population.   The GNC were complicit in the crimes against civilians. The West wanted all elements loyal to Muammar Gaddafi and the Al Fateh Revolution  eliminated.
